Rendon (elbow contusion) remains shelved

DENVER -- Third baseman remained out of the starting lineup as the Nationals opened a three-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field on Monday night. Rendon was hit on the left elbow by a fastball from Marlins right-hander Jose Urena on Saturday, which resulted in a contusion.

Washington manager Dave Martinez said Rendon was available to pinch-hit Monday, but the Nationals did not end up using him.

"He's doing a little better," Martinez said. "He's able to bend his arm back and forth, so that's a good sign. He's going to get treatment all day, and hopefully, he'll be available later on. We'll see."

The Nationals recalled utility infielder Jake Noll from Triple-A Fresno on Monday and optioned right-hander Austin Adams. Martinez said that reducing the size of the bullpen by one reliever as the club begins a series at hitter-friendly Coors Field is something the Nationals felt comfortable with after Stephen Strasburg gave them eight scoreless innings in Sunday's series finale vs. the Marlins.

"It's tough to have only three bench players, especially with one being a catcher," Martinez said. "So it enabled us to bring in another guy off the bench, and our bullpen's ready to go today after getting pretty much a day off [Sunday]."

It leaves the Nats without their best hitter -- Rendon is slashing .371/.451/.771 with a league-leading 10 doubles to go along with six home runs -- and now four bench players: Matt Adams, Kurt Suzuki, Michael A. Taylor and Noll.

Noll made the Opening Day roster out of Spring Training after he hit an impressive .314 with four doubles and two homers in 27 games as a non-roster invitee. He struggled early on after being sent back down to Triple-A Fresno, however, batting .189 (10-for-53) with two doubles and a homer in 14 games.

If Rendon is unable to return within the next day or two, the club will have to make a decision as to whether to place him on the 10-day injured list, which would enable another player to take his place on the 25-man roster, or try to wait in the hopes of Rendon returning soon enough to avoid going too long with only 24 available players.

In other injury news, shortstop Trea Turner's status remains the same as he works to return from a broken right index finger.

"He's been doing all baseball activities except for pretty much hitting and throwing," Martinez said. "But he's doing everything he can to stay in shape and be ready so when he's able to hit and throw, he can do it."

Right-hander Max Scherzer, who tweaked the intercostal muscle on his left side while jumping to avoid a foul ball in the dugout Sunday, is fine, according to Martinez.

"Max is Max," Martinez said. "He's going through his routine before the game, getting ready for his next start."
