HOUSTON -- Astros second baseman and starting pitcher are teaming up for a charity event May 18 at Tootsies in Houston called "Team Up for Kids and K9s" to raise money for their foundations.
The Lance McCullers Jr. Foundation is a nonprofit organization managed by Athletes and Causes, which supports pet shelters in Houston. The Jose Altuve Foundation is a fiscal sponsorship of Athletes and Causes created for the event that will support the Sunshine Kids, a foundation that benefits kids with cancer.
"I live here in the offseason so I talked to Altuve a little bit about possibly doing an event," McCullers said. "I could tell he was interested. We share the same agency and I thought it would be a good fit for both us to do something together."
McCullers, Altuve and their wives, Kara McCullers and Nina Altuve, and other Astros players and wives will be at the event, which includes food, wine and drinks and a silent auction.
"It's always great to give back to the community," Altuve said. "Like Lance said, we're going to get together to do the charity event. Obviously, he's passionate with animals and dogs. Since he did that I'm going with the Sunshine Kids. Always you have an opportunity to help somebody to this kind of event, it's good to do it, especially here in Houston since we play here."
Sponsorships start at $3,000 and range to $15,000 for title sponsorship. For more information, contact Rob Canton at [email protected].
