Pipeline Preview: Chapman looks to continue power surge

June 7th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Matt Chapman (A's No. 4), Nashville at Omaha (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
The No. 89 overall prospect went deep for a third time in four games for Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, giving him 14 homers in 42 games for the season. Chapman also owns a five-game hitting streak, during which he's tallied six RBIs and five runs scored. The 24-year-old third baseman is hitting .255/.335/.595 overall, with strikeout and walk rates of 33 and 10.8 percent.

Pitcher to watch: Brent Honeywell (Rays' No. 2), Durham at Charlotte (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
After giving up two earned runs or fewer in five of his first seven starts for Triple-A Durham, Honeywell, the No. 24 overall prospect, has struggled of late, allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits in 8 2/3 frames over his last two turns. Overall, the 22-year-old righty has posted a 5.10 ERA and a 55-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 47 2/3 innings for the Bulls, during which he's allowed 57 hits (.289 BAA) including seven home runs.

Duel of the day: (Braves' No. 8) vs. Corbin Burnes (Brewers' No. 20), Mississippi vs. Biloxi (8 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Ranked 93rd on the Top 100, Fried has been challenged in Double-A this season, pitching to a 5.49 ERA in 57 1/3 innings (11 starts) after making the jump directly from Class A Rome. That being said, the 23-year-old lefty has still managed to complete at least six frames in four of his last six starts, during which he's punched out 39 (and walked 14) in 35 2/3 innings.

Burnes, meanwhile, tossed 3 2/3 hitless frames in his Double-A debut before a rain delay forced him from the game. The 22-year-old righty had fanned four and walked one up to that point. Burnes was promoted to the Southern League after he went 5-0 in 10 starts while pacing the Class A Advanced Carolina League in ERA (1.05) and WHIP (0.88).
