A's ready for full-squad workouts to begin

February 19th, 2018

MESA, Ariz. -- A's position players will join the pack at Hohokam Stadium on Monday, as the club readies for its first official full-squad workout.
"It's an important day," manager Bob Melvin said. "You have a big meeting with everybody and you want to present a little message of what you think's important going forward, and with the excitement that we built last year, the way we finished up, we should be excited about it."
The up-and-coming A's will have an influx of young talent flooding the room Monday. The majority of them have already been working out at the club's complex.
"And everybody is excited about getting back together tomorrow and working out as a team," Melvin said.
During the annual introductory meeting, Melvin will share the floor with A's president Dave Kaval, who is also expected to speak. Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, back as a special instructor, will be among those in attendance as well.
A shortened spring schedule means just four days of full-squad workouts before Cactus League games begin Friday, so the A's will forego their usual intrasquad games.
Puk on display again
A's top pitching prospect continues to impress, drawing more rave reviews from Melvin following his second bullpen session Sunday.

The lefty's spring performance won't dictate where he begins the season, with Puk almost guaranteed to join Triple-A Nashville when camp breaks. But that hasn't stopped the A's from daydreaming about Puk pitching in the big league rotation.
"That's not my job to say when they get here," Melvin said. "Obviously, you gotta get into games and you don't want to get a guy there before he's ready. But when we first got him, to see where he is right now, it's tempting not to say, 'Let's just start with him.'
"We'll see how he does performance-wise, but my guess is he'll do pretty well."
