Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for July 14:

1. Tim Hudson (1975)

Over 17 seasons, Hudson went 222-133 with a 3.49 ERA and 57.9 bWAR across 479 starts for the Athletics, Braves and Giants. He won a World Series with San Francisco in 2014, and he also earned four All-Star selections. The right-hander finished in the top five for Cy Young Award voting twice. Hudson stayed ready when it was his turn in the rotation -- he tied for first among all pitchers in starts twice (35, '01 and '06) -- and he posted an above-.500 record in all but two of his seasons.

2. Robin Ventura (1967)

Ventura was a defensive stopper on the hot corner during his 16-year career. He won six Gold Glove Awards, including leading all third basemen with a .980 fielding percentage in 1999. Ventura, a two-time All-Star, slashed .267/.362/.444 with a 56.1 bWAR as a member of the White Sox, Mets, Yankees and Dodgers. He also managed Chicago from 2012-16.

3. Johnny Murphy (1908)

Murphy experienced winning on the field and in the front office. As a player, he captured six World Series championships and earned three All-Star nods in 13 seasons (12 with the Yankees, one with the Red Sox). The right-hander went 93-53 with a 3.50 ERA and 107 saves across 415 games, including 40 starts. Murphy became the general manager of the Mets, and he led the club to the 1969 World Series title.

4. Steve Stone (1947)

Stone won the 1980 American League Cy Young Award as a member of the Orioles. That season, he went 25-7 with a 3.23 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 37 starts (250 2/3 innings). Stone posted a 107-93 record and a 3.97 ERA in 11 seasons with the Giants, White Sox, Cubs and O’s.

5. Lucas Giolito (1994)

Giolito threw the 19th no-hitter in White Sox history on Aug. 25, 2020, with 13 strikeouts against the Pirates. Originally selected with the 16th overall pick by Washington in the '12 MLB Draft, Giolito was traded to Chicago in December 2016 after one season. He earned his first All-Star selection in '19, the same season in which he threw three complete games and two shutouts.

Others of note:

Carson Kelly (1994)

Although Kelly was selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2012 MLB Draft as a third baseman, he transitioned to the catcher position. After being traded to the D-backs in '18, he tied the club record for the most home runs hit by a catcher in a single season (18) in '19.

Bob Purkey (1929)

Purkey, a righty knuckleballer, compiled a 129-115 record and a 3.79 ERA in 13 seasons with the Pirates, Reds and Cardinals. He posted a league-best .821 winning percentage (23-5) in 1962, and he placed third in Cy Young Award voting that season. Purkey also earned five All-Star selections.

Jesse Tannehill (1874)

The lefty Tannehill won the 1901 National League ERA title as a member of the Pirates with a 2.18 mark. He was 197-117 with a 2.80 ERA and 46.9 bWAR over 15 seasons. Tannehill, a switch-hitter, also made his mark at the plate with a .255 career batting average.
