Blue Jays activate Carrera, designate Lake

August 16th, 2016

The Blue Jays activated outfielder from the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday night's game against the Yankees.
Carrera had been out since July 31 with a strained left Achilles' tendon. Outfielder was designated for assignment to make room for Carrera on the 25-man active roster.
Even though Carrera was added to the roster he was not in the starting lineup for Tuesday night's game vs. New York. got the start in left field after he had three hits in his previous four games and that trend could continue.
"We like him, he'll get plenty of at-bats," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Ceciliani. "Zeke had cooled off right before we put him on the DL and not many hits down there on his rehab but he sparked us the last time Jose (Bautista) went down so hopefully he can get going quick here. He plays a different type of game that should help us."
Toronto currently has a pair of openings in its outfield because and Bautista are on the disabled list. Pillar hit off a tee on Tuesday and also went some light defensive drills with an eye towards returning on Aug. 23. Bautista is expected to be out until at least the end of the month.
Melvin Upton Jr. will continue to start in center field during Pillar's absence. When Pillar returns, Upton likely would shift to a corner outfield spot and then Ceciliani would have to be optioned to the Minor Leagues. Carerra does not have options remaining on his deal.
"We haven't talked much about that yet but maybe something this weekend," Gibbons said when asked if Pillar would need a rehab assignment before returning. "He may not need it. He hit in a cage today and felt pretty good. Took some groundballs, fly ball type stuff."
