TORONTO -- Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Alford will undergo surgery next week to repair a broken hamate bone in his left wrist.
Toronto announced on Saturday morning that Alford will travel to Arizona early next week to have the procedure performed by hand specialist Dr. Donald Sheridan. Alford is expected to be out for at least the next 4-6 weeks, depending on his recovery.
Alford sustained the injury in the same game that he picked up his first Major League hit. He doubled against the Brewers on Wednesday, then broke the hamate bone while fouling off a pitch during the ninth inning. His departure created one of two spots used to accommodate the Friday returns of Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson.

The 22-year-old Alford is ranked the No. 3 prospect in Toronto's system by MLBPipeline.com. He's also listed as the No. 63 prospect in all of baseball and earned a promotion to the Majors after hitting .325 with 10 extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in 33 games for Double-A New Hampshire.
Tulo and Donaldson get a day off
As expected, Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson were held out of the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Saturday afternoon to rest. Both players made their returns from the disabled list for Friday's series opener against the Rangers.
Tulowitzki had been out since April 21 with a strained right hamstring, while Donaldson had been out since April 13 with a strained right calf. Both players are expected to be back in the lineup for Sunday's series finale but the Blue Jays wanted to avoid starting them on back-to-back days, particularly with Saturday's quick turnaround following a night game.

The day off had been previously scheduled. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons announced it after Friday's game to avoid any talk about potential setbacks for either core piece.
"It does something to you, naturally," Gibbons said. "I thought they both did a nice job, too. Tulo had a lot of chances out in the field, and Donaldson hit the double in his first at-bat. ... As we go along, day game with some night games, we'll keep an eye on that for a little bit anyway."
