NEW YORK -- Ryan Goins homered and drove in four runs to support another strong effort from Marco Estrada as the Blue Jays defeated the Yankees, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game series on Monday at Yankee Stadium.
Goins slugged a two-run shot in the second inning and connected for a rare two-run sacrifice fly in the sixth. Chris Coghlan and Jose Bautista also homered for the Blue Jays, who have won 11 of the last 16 meetings between the American League East rivals.
Estrada picked up his first win by limiting the Yankees to an Aaron Judge RBI single over seven innings. Estrada scattered seven hits while striking out five to remain undefeated in his last seven starts against New York, and the right-hander has permitted just three earned runs in his last 27 innings (1.00 ERA).

"We've been coming up short on wins, but the guys have been playing some pretty good ball," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We're in every game. Of course, Marco, just when you know you've got a depleted bullpen. He has to be the most underrated pitcher in the game. Against a good-hitting, hot team, too. But I've seen him do it way too many times for it to be a fluke."

Yankees starter Luis Severino took his second loss, charged with a season-high five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
"My fastball command wasn't there," Severino said. "My slider wasn't there, too. I was trying to fight to keep the game to two runs and give the team a chance to win. I was battling over there."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Body sacrifice: Jacoby Ellsbury crashed into the center-field wall to make a sensational running catch on Goins' sixth-inning drive, then attempted to flip the ball to right fielder Judge from the warning track. The toss sailed over Judge's head as Justin Smoak and Devon Travis both raced home for a rare two-run sacrifice fly. Ellsbury appeared to be shaken up but stayed in the game. Goins is the first player in Blue Jays history to record two RBIs on a sacrifice fly.

"It was quite a play," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's unfortunate that they scored two runs on it, but it was a great play." More >

Joey Bats goes boom: After Estrada worked out of a jam to pin two runners aboard in the bottom of the sixth, Bautista helped the Blue Jays pull away by mashing a Luis Cessa fastball into the visiting bullpen in left field. Bautista's drive gave Toronto a six-run lead and was the hardest-hit homer by a Blue Jays player so far this season, coming off the bat at 109.1 mph, according to Statcast™.
"For the last week, 10 days, he is starting to look like the old guy," Gibbons said. "All we've ever known is Jose being good, and he had an unusual slow start, but he is picking it up."

The Yankees successfully challenged a call at third base in the top of the ninth inning, as Bautista was initially ruled safe at third after advancing from first on Kendrys Morales' single to right field. A review of one minute and one second showed that Ronald Torreyes received Judge's throw in time to nail Bautista, and the call was overturned. The Yanks are 7-for-9 on replay reviews in 2017.

Blue Jays: Right-hander Mat Latos (0-0, 3.27) will take the mound when the Blue Jays continue their three-game series vs. the Yankees on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. Latos will be making his third start of the season as he continues to fill in while J.A. Happ and Aaron Sanchez are on the disabled list. In his last outing, Latos tossed six scoreless innings vs. the Cardinals.
Yankees:Masahiro Tanaka (3-1, 4.20) heads to the hill for his sixth start of the season on Monday, coming off what may have been his best effort as a Yankee -- a three-hit shutout against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Tanaka is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in his last three starts after struggling in his first two outings.
