Hand could earn unlikely $50K bonus

Anything is possible

Contractual bonuses are nothing new in baseball. Most contracts include bonuses for postseason berths, All-Star Game appearances, or MVP and Cy Young Award finishes. They're presumably standard boilerplate added on during contract negotiations -- the way your car dealership will throw in that undercoat protection if you upgrade to leather seats.

There's even some truly bizarre ones -- like how Rollie Fingers received $100 worth of mustache wax to groom his signature 'stache, or how Troy Glaus got an extra $300,000 for his wife's equestrian work.

But there's one that may be a little more difficult for new Nationals reliever Brad Hand to achieve: a Silver Slugger Award that could net him a cool $50,000.

It's already hard enough for relievers to get at-bats, but Hand is also ... not exactly making the case to become a two-way player. Hand is just 5-for-72 in his career -- good for a .069 average -- and hasn't recorded a base hit since lacing a single against Stephen Strasburg in 2015.

His first came four years earlier against Derek Lowe:

Hand would likely need to triple his career total of hits in 2021 to have a chance at the hardware. Zack Greinke -- the last pitcher to win the Silver Slugger (because of the pandemic, both leagues used the DH last year) -- posted a .280 batting average with 14 hits in 2019 to take home the award.

Still, even one hit against big league pitching is more than most people can pull off. And Hand is far from the worst hitting pitcher in history, as his .069 average ranks 96th among all pitchers with at least 50 plate appearances.

So, who's the worst? That title belongs to Fred Gladding, who was just 1-for-63 across a 12-year career. (Current D-backs pitcher Merrill Kelly has a chance to catch him. Kelly was just 1-for-52 in his 2019 rookie season.)
