Belt out with illness for finale vs. Dodgers

June 9th, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants first baseman was scratched from Sunday's starting lineup against the Dodgers after coming down with a stomach illness.

Evan Longoria, who was originally set to receive a day off, started at third base, with Pablo Sandoval shifting to first in Belt's absence. Manager Bruce Bochy said he was unsure if Belt would be available off the bench in any capacity against the Dodgers.

"I won't know until [head athletic trainer Dave Groeshner] gets a look at him and let's me know if he's available," Bochy said.

Belt has been the Giants' hottest hitter over the last two weeks, reaching base safely in 14 consecutive games and batting .313/.459/.500 with three doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored over that span.

Injury updates

• Buster Posey (right hamstring strain) has resumed hitting and ran on a treadmill Sunday. Bochy said Posey is scheduled to come to Oracle Park on Monday's off-day to run the bases. The Giants are hoping their star catcher will be ready to come off the 10-day injured list once he's eligible on Wednesday.

"If all goes well, it's a possibility," Bochy said. "If not, we can push him back."

• Left-hander Travis Bergen (left shoulder strain) threw a scoreless inning in his first rehab appearance with Class A Advanced San Jose on Friday and said he is scheduled to pitch again Monday in Stockton. The 25-year-old rookie has been sidelined since May 21 and will require a few more outings in the Minors before he's ready to return.
