LOS ANGELES -- Kyle Wright is set to return to the Braves to provide some depth to their bullpen, which was taxed when Max Fried completed just one inning before exiting Tuesday night’s 9-0 loss to the Dodgers with a bruised left hand.
Wright was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett before Wednesday night’s series finale at Dodger Stadium. Left-handed reliever Grant Dayton was optioned to Gwinnett to create a roster spot.
Because Josh Tomlin will be unavailable for a few days after completing four innings on Tuesday, the Braves turned to Wright, who had been scheduled to start for Gwinnett on Wednesday. Wright -- the No. 2 prospect in Atlanta’s system, per MLB Pipeline -- began this season in the big league rotation but was demoted after posting a 7.07 ERA over three starts.
Wright’s struggles continued in Triple-A, as he allowed at least five runs in two of his first three starts made for Gwinnett. But the 23-year-old hurler, who is less than two years removed from pitching for Vanderbilt University, turned things around while limiting Durham to three runs over seven innings on Friday.
