Breaking down the Red Sox's 2016 Top 30 Prospects

Blue-chip quartet gives Boston 6th-ranked farm system

March 3rd, 2016

No team has a better foursome of prospects than the Red Sox do in second baseman Yoan Moncada, third baseman Rafael Devers, outfielder Andrew Benintendi and right-hander Anderson Espinoza. They teamed up last year at low Class A Greenville, a loaded club that also included 2014 first-round picks Michael Kopech and Michael Chavis -- and are the primary reasons that Boston came in at No. 6 in's farm-system rankings.

Though Boston has followed a World Series championship in 2013 with consecutive last-place finishes in the American League East, the last two years haven't been a complete loss. Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts became stars at age 22, and Jackie Bradley Jr., Henry Owens, Eduardo Rodriguez and Blake Swihart also have graduated to Fenway Park. Between the Majors and Minors, the Red Sox have as much young blue-chip talent as any organization.

With the possible exception of left-hander Brian Johnson, rookies don't figure to play a prominent role in Boston in 2016. But that Greenville contingent could race to the big leagues, with Moncada and Benintendi pushing for a chance in early 2017 and teenagers Devers, Espinoza and Kopech not far behind.
