SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Brewers right-hander Taylor Jungmann pitched four scoreless innings in a 5-2 victory over the Rangers on Thursday night.
Rangers closer Shawn Tolleson, who had been sidelined with tightness in his lower back, made his first Cactus League appearance. He entered the game in the fifth and pitched a scoreless inning. Tolleson faced four batters, allowed one single and threw 14 pitches.
"I felt really good," Tolleson said. "I was excited to get out there and pitch in that kind of environment. Most importantly I felt good, my stuff felt really good and my back had no issues."
Jungmann faced 13 hitters and retired 11 of them, allowing only a single to James Jones and a walk to Adrian Beltre. Jones was thrown out trying to steal. Jungmann struck out three and threw 54 pitches.
"I felt like I was searching a little bit the whole time I was out there," Jungmann said. "But the results were good. I always say you can't take too much from Spring Training outings. As much as I was working on things, those hitters are working on swings, approaches, looking for certain pitches, things like that. So there's only so much you can take from it."
He has pitched seven scoreless innings over his last two starts.
"You get to that first outing when the season starts, nobody is ever going to remember any of these stats," Jungmann said. "I don't take any of this seriously, really, when it comes to stats."
Rangers starter Nick Tepesch, who missed all of last season while dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder, allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, including a home run by Scooter Gennett, walked two and struck out two. Gennett went 3-for-3.
Left-handed reliever Chad Bell pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Andrew Faulkner pitched two scoreless innings for the Rangers. Faulkner, going two innings for the first time this spring, has not allowed a run in six Cactus League innings and another in a B game.
Rangers outfielder Ryan Cordell had to leave the game in the seventh inning when he rolled his right ankle trying to beat out an infield hit. He will be re-examined on Friday.
Up next for the Brewers:Ryan Braun is expected back in the lineup Friday for his second Cactus League game as the Brewers host the Reds at Maryvale Baseball Park. Braun, who has eased into this spring because he underwent back surgery in October, debuted Wednesday with a single and a walk in what he deemed a good first test. He'll play left field behind Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson, who, barring an early exit, will become the first Brewers pitcher to take an at-bat this spring.
Up next for the Rangers: Left-hander Derek Holland will be on the mound for the Rangers when they face the Royals at 7:05 p.m. (CT) Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Outfielder Delino DeShields and infielder Jurickson Profar are also on the trip to San Antonio, although most of the Rangers' regulars stay in Arizona. The Rangers play the Mariners at 3:05 p.m. (CT) Friday in Peoria. Minor League left-hander Victor Payano will pitch for the Rangers.
