Brewers claim INF/OF Lopes from Mariners

December 22nd, 2020

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers added a potential utility man on Tuesday by winning a waiver claim for Tim Lopes, who played parts of the past two seasons for the Mariners.

Lopes, 26, is a .252/.315/.362 hitter in 279 big league plate appearances for Seattle and an overall .277/.339/.382 hitter over eight seasons in the Minors. Drafted by Seattle out of high school in 2012, Lopes is a right-handed hitter and thrower who has started Major League games in left field, right field, second base and third base, and has also started Minor League games at shortstop. He was designated for assignment by Seattle last week.

The Brewers, who covet versatile defenders, have a pair of players on the 40-man roster with similar resumes in Mark Mathias and Luis Urías. Lopes, Mathias and Urías all have multiple option years remaining.

With Lopes onboard, the Brewers have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
