Grisham homers twice, hits for cycle

July 31st, 2019

Brewers prospect Trent Grisham is one of the hottest hitters in the Minors right now, and he certainly proved as much on Tuesday.

Milwuakee's No. 7 prospect not only homered twice, but also hit for the cycle to lead Triple-A San Antonio to an 8-4 win over Sacramento, a Giants affiliate.

Grisham, who has homered three times over the past three games and has multiple hits in four straight, is hitting .381 though 34 games with the Missions after matching his career high with five hits. In his past four games, he has reached base by hit or walk 18 times in 23 plate appearances, going 12-for-17 with six walks.

The 22-year-old, batting atop the San Antonio lineup, got off to a fast start as he homered in both the first and second innings. A two-homer game, Grisham’s third of the year, certainly would have been notable, but the outfielder was far from done.

Grisham tacked on an RBI single in the fourth, doubled in the sixth and then ended his night with a triple in the seventh.

To put Grisham's game in perspective, consider that there have only been eight two-homer cycles in Major League history, and only one since 1979, when George Brett accomplished the feat for the Royals.

The Brewers selected Grisham with the 15th overall pick of the 2015 Draft, but after he hit .309 in his professional debut, he struggled at the plate in each of the next three seasons. After looking into his mechanics, the Brewers discovered that Grisham’s point of contact was too deep so they made some adjustments prior to the 2019 season.

The results speak for themselves.

Grisham has already hit 26 homers, crushing his career-high mark of eight. Grisham is slashing .300/.407/.603 across two levels (97 games) this season and all three of those numbers would be his best marks since 2015.
