Marlins call up Holaday; Wallach to 10-day IL

May 24th, 2019

WASHINGTON -- The Marlins placed back-up catcher Chad Wallach on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 22) with a concussion on Friday and selected catcher Bryan Holaday from Triple-A New Orleans.

Wallach was injured during Tuesday’s 5-4 11-inning win against the Tigers.

“It was a foul ball. He got hit a couple of times,” manager Don Mattingly said Friday. “I know the umpire one time just went to sweep, to clean off the plate. I don’t know if he hears something different back there, but I saw [Wallach] get nicked a couple times where the head just turns. But you see it all the time. Honestly you don’t think about it until the next day when it pops up and you deal with it.”

Wallach, 27, had a pair of RBI doubles in the game. The second one provided the decisive run in the 11th inning and was Wallach’s first game-winning hit of the season, a shot to left-center off Joe Jimenez that scored Miguel Rojas from first base.

However, on Wednesday morning Wallach was having issues with his neck and ended up in the concussion protocol. Holaday was brought up to back up Jorge Alfaro.

Wallach is hitting .250 with a homer and three RBIs in 48 at-bats.

Holaday, 31, is a familiar face in Miami. He appeared in 61 games for the Marlins last season, hitting .205 with a homer and 16 RBIs.

“Really comfortable with Bryan,” Mattingly said. “He was here all year last year. Love what he was all about. A guy that worked behind the plate, got prepped for games. You know what you’re going to get.”

Wallach won the back-up job in Spring Training and Holaday opted out of his contract but re-signed a Minor League deal with the Marlins on March 26 and opened the season with the Baby Cakes.

He’s hitting .247 with two homers, 12 RBIs, 17 walks and just 12 strikeouts at New Orleans.

“It was a tough call at the end. He had a good spring,” Mattingly said. “We were really happy that he got back in the system for this type of situation. Obviously happy he’s here. He does know our guys and we know the way he works.”

Notes

• To make room for Holaday on the 40-man roster, OF Isaac Galloway of New Orleans was designated for assignment. He hit .167 in 54 at-bats with Miami earlier this season.

• RHP Riley Ferrell (right biceps tendinitis) is scheduled to pitch two innings for New Orleans on Saturday.

• RHP Julian Fernandez (recovering from Tommy John surgery) will pitch an inning in extended spring training on Saturday.
