Notes: Posey absent, 2 on IL, '21 schedule

July 10th, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants catcher was not at Oracle Park for the second consecutive day on Thursday, marking his third missed workout in the first seven days of Summer Camp. Manager Gabe Kapler said Posey is dealing with a personal issue that also kept him out of action on Friday and Wednesday.

“Buster is still working through a personal issue,” Kapler said. “I want to respect his privacy. We’ll cross any subsequent bridges as they arise.”

Posey acknowledged last week that he wasn’t ruling out the possibility of electing not to play this season due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. The 33-year-old veteran said he would continue to monitor the situation, both in San Francisco and around the country.

"I think he's continuing to evaluate things on a day-to-day basis, and frankly, I think there's a few guys in that boat,” president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said Thursday on KNBR. “Certainly guys with young families, and certainly Buster is in that boat. It’s something else to think about. I don't want to get into other personal things that he may be thinking, but ultimately, we’re going to respect the decisions that any of our players make.”

The Giants have only two weeks to go until Opening Day, but Kapler said the club will allow its players to make decisions on their own timelines.

“There is no question that when players opt out around the league, that means their teams, their managers and their players have to adjust,” Kapler said. “I think that’s very obvious, and just leaving that aside, I think because of what we’re up against right now, we are going to take a family-first approach to this. We will take it on as a responsibility to scramble as necessary. But we don’t want to rush these very personal decisions. We want to respect and honor the stressors that people have that we may not be seeing.”

The Giants have five other catchers in camp: Rob Brantly, Tyler Heineman, Chadwick Tromp, Joey Bart and Patrick Bailey. Brantly and Heineman, both of whom are non-roster invitees, are viewed as the frontrunners for the backup job at the moment.

García, Hamilton to IL

The Giants placed outfielder and left-handed reliever on the 10-day injured list for “medical purposes,” according to Kapler. No injuries were specified. Neither García nor Hamilton has been spotted at Oracle Park over the first week of Summer Camp.

MLB has instituted a COVID-19 list this season, but the league will not announce which players are placed on it due to privacy laws regarding individuals’ health. Players may address their status if they wish, though they are not required to. Players do not need to test positive to be placed on the COVID-19 list. Potential exposure to a person who has the virus can be sufficient cause.

2021 schedule released

Major League Baseball released the schedule for the 2021 season on Thursday, announcing that the Giants will play their season opener against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park on April 1. Their home opener is scheduled for April 9 against the Rockies.

The slate features Interleague games against American League West clubs, with the Giants set to make trips to Seattle, Texas and Anaheim. They will host the D-backs and Padres in their final homestand of the year at Oracle Park and play their season finale on Oct. 3.
