Posey doesn't plan to be on shelf for long

Giants' star catcher expects to return on Wednesday

June 8th, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants are optimistic they won’t be without star catcher for long.

Posey, who has been out since June 1 with a right hamstring strain, is progressing well and said his goal is to return from the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday when he is first eligible. Posey participated in team stretch and did some throwing on Friday and is slated to resume hitting Saturday.

The 32-year-old said he felt his hamstring tighten up during a game against the Orioles on June 1 and exacerbated the injury while attempting to beat out a ground ball in the seventh inning in his final at-bat.

“I tried to keep it loose, and then that last at-bat, I kind of hit that tweener ground ball and pretty much felt it grab on me going down the line,” said Posey, who hasn’t dealt with hamstring issues in the past. “I thought I had a chance to beat it out before I realized the guy on the mound [Miguel Castro] was 6'7". He got there in three steps. I should have just taken it easy.”

The Giants plan to platoon veteran Stephen Vogt and rookie Aramis Garcia behind the plate in Posey’s absence. Garcia, a right-handed hitter, will start against Dodgers left-handers Clayton Kershaw and Rich Hill on Friday and Saturday. Vogt is scheduled to catch Madison Bumgarner and face right-hander Walker Buehler in Sunday’s finale.

Bergen update
Manager Bruce Bochy said left-hander Travis Bergen is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Class A Advanced San Jose on Friday and throw one inning. Bergen, who has been on the injured list since May 21 with a left shoulder strain, will likely need a few outings before he’s ready to return to the Giants.

Menez impressing
The Giants promoted left-hander Conner Menez to Triple-A Sacramento after he logged a 2.72 ERA over 11 starts with Double-A Richmond this season. The 24-year-old Hollister native has issued 20 walks and racked up 70 strikeouts over 59 2/3 innings.

“He’s throwing well, isn’t he?” Bochy said. “He really did this spring. He’s got good stuff. A lefty with that kind of stuff, sure, no question he’s been on the radar. He’s been moved, and it’s well deserved because he’s throwing the ball well.”
