Fowler (heel), Siegrist (spine) placed on DL

Players to undergo testing to determine severity of chronic injuries

June 25th, 2017

ST. LOUIS -- After placing (right heel spur) and (cervical spine sprain) on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, the Cardinals scheduled medical studies for both players in order to determine the severity of their chronic injuries. Fowler will visit a podiatrist on Monday. Siegrist left Busch Stadium on Sunday afternoon for his appointment.
Fowler has said he's dealt with heel discomfort "off and on forever," and he aggravated the injury chasing after a ball in Saturday's loss. After the game, he told the Cardinals, "I don't have a leg to stand on."
The Cardinals believe Fowler's heel issue has led to his other leg injuries this season, including the left quadriceps tightness that kept him out of two games last week. General manager John Mozeliak said he hopes giving Fowler time off his feet will reduce the discomfort.
"From what I'm hearing from the doctors, it doesn't sound too concerning," Mozeliak said. "But it does sound like it could be chronic, at this time. How you manage it, I think, is critical."
The same will likely be the case for Siegrist, whose neck instability is likely the root of previous injuries he's had around that area of his body. It was enough of a bother now, though, for the Cardinals to press pause.
"I think it's one of those things where he's probably just going to have to pitch with it," Mozeliak said. "But at least doing these studies will give us an idea of if we are on the right path for treatment."
Siegrist has a 4.28 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 31 relief appearances this season.

State of the team
During his assessment of a team sitting seven games below .500, Mozeliak acknowledged that he plans to "keep everything on the table" in the weeks leading up to the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.
"I think you're starting to see some teams start to declare buy, sell, that sort of thing," Mozeliak said. "I don't think labeling us one way or another is necessarily the right strategy. I think the right strategy is try to figure out a way to A) change the current culture and dynamic, and B) try to find a way to start winning more baseball games.
"We're not on a great path right now. I can't sit here and tell you we've got this figured out. We should be winning and we're not. There's a legitimate frustration from top to bottom."
Mayers joins bullpen
, who had two stints with the Cardinals last season, was recalled on Saturday to take Siegrist's spot in the bullpen. He comes with built-up arm strength after making 14 Triple-A starts, and he's fresh, having last pitched on Tuesday. With Mayers as a long-relief option, the Cardinals will have more flexibility in how they deploy .
Mayers has been especially strong as of late. He leaves Memphis having posted a 0.87 ERA over his last five starts. He's hoping for a fresh start in St. Louis, too. In four big league appearances (one start) last year, Mayers allowed 16 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
"It was all a learning process," Mayers said. "It didn't go the way I wanted it to go, but I feel like where I'm at, right now my last few outings, I feel like I'm ready to go."
