HOUSTON -- Watch out, there’s a Tasmanian Devil on the loose in Texas.
Well, not quite.
Right-handed reliever Chase Silseth -- or as they call him, the Tasmanian Devil -- joined the Rangers in Houston on Friday after he and catcher Logan O'Hoppe were acquired by Texas from the Angels on Wednesday.
“What I want to do is just come and help a team, that's my main goal,” Silseth said. “I'm going to give it my all. I'm a very, very competitive guy. You’ll probably see it and get used to it out there. I got a nickname over there where I got called the 'Tasmanian Devil' because I'm so Looney Tunes. I’ve been ready.
“I had a middle school teacher tell my mom, ‘You gotta tell this kid to learn how to lose, because he gets crazy out there.’ She was like, ‘How do you teach a kid how to lose?’ I’m always trying to win."
Silseth admits he never really learned how to lose, per se. It’s been tough his first couple of years in the big leagues on a relatively non-competitive team. But now, he’s ready to join the Rangers for a postseason push.
The right-hander, who figures to be a leverage arm out of the bullpen, has posted a 2.72 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP over 47 relief appearances with the Angels in 2026. Despite issuing 22 walks, he’s averaged 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings, holding opposing batters to a .230/.329/.331 slash.
“I like that type of player,” said Rangers manager Skip Schumaker. “I like the guy that is going to do whatever he can to win. He is definitely that profile. Sometimes you need to be a little bit of a psycho, a little bit of a prick, all that stuff when you're on the mound. I like that alter ego. I like that type of style of play, and it seems like he's gonna fit right in.
“That part is real. I want those guys that in August and September are ready to roll and not scared of the high-leverage, big inning. There's no doubt in my mind that he's ready for it.”
