Sadzeck excited to join Mariners

Righty was traded to Seattle on Monday; Encarnacion sits for precautionary reasons

CHICAGO -- had waited a week to make his potential season debut before Thursday's postponement of the opener of the Mariners’ three-game series with the Chicago White Sox forced him to wait at least one more day.

Still, the 27-year-old right-hander is just grateful for the opportunity to establish himself as a Major Leaguer after not making the Texas Rangers’ Opening Day roster. Sadzeck was designated for assignment at the end of Spring Training and traded to the Mariners on Monday.

“It was definitely a long week, not making the Rangers and hanging out in Arlington,” he said. “It was definitely an emotional roller coaster. I’m really excited to be here. These guys look like they’re having a ton of fun, and I think that it shows in the wins that they have.”

Sadzeck made 13 appearances last season with the Rangers as a September callup, compiling an 0.96 ERA over 9 1/3 innings.

“He’s got a great arm; fastball up to 98, 99 miles an hour, a pretty good breaking pitch,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “We’re just trying to get our pitching guys around him. I know they met with him the other day and maybe [offered] some ideas on how he can maybe use his stuff a little bit differently, and we’ll take a shot.

“When you’re a young guy like that and you’ve got that kind of ability, he’s going to continue to get a lot of chances and we’re going to give him one here.”

Despite not making the Rangers, Sadzeck believes he had a breakthrough during his brief time in the Majors last season.

“My fastball is kind of what I’m known for, but I think the secondary stuff really came around in September,” he said. “My slider really played up last year and I think that’s the game plan: really focus on that to complement my fastball. That way I don’t have to be as fine and feel as much pressure to throw that fastball where I need to throw it.”

Worth noting

Designated hitter (sore left wrist) was held out of the lineup for a second straight game, but Servais said he’s fine and available to pinch-hit.

“Eddie’s feeling a lot better today,” Servais said. “I thought just to give him an extra day.”
