Dickerson exits with groin discomfort, feels good

July 7th, 2019

PITTSBURGH -- jogged toward the infield to play a routine fly ball off the bat of Brewers catcher Yasmani Grandal in Saturday's 12-2 win over the Brewers at PNC Park. But despite the normality of the play, the end result was a far too familiar sign for the Pirates.

That seventh-inning sequence in Pittsburgh’s game against the Brewers at PNC Park on Saturday led Dickerson to motion to trainer Bryan Housand, and the left fielder then exited the game. The Pirates announced the official reason for removal as right groin discomfort.

After tossing the ball to Kevin Newman, Dickerson tried to stretch out his right leg and limped slightly as he tested its abilities. Following his departure, his spot in left field was taken over by Bryan Reynolds and his spot in the order was filled by right fielder Melky Cabrera.

“As I caught the ball, I just tried to reactivate [the groin],” Dickerson said. “And I could feel something was still there, so there was no reason to really push it. So I just went ahead and called [Housand] out.”

Dickerson, who won a Gold Glove Award last season, missed more than two months between April and June with a right-posterior shoulder strain. He’s only appeared in 27 games in 2019, slashing .274/.315/.476 with 11 doubles.

If he requires a stay on the injured list, Dickerson’s appearance on the list would be the 27th IL stint by Pirates players this season. The 26th came Saturday morning, when Steven Brault was diagnosed with a left shoulder strain and placed on the 10-day injured list.

But after walking around in the clubhouse a bit, Dickerson said he felt “pretty good” doing his normal routine.

“We just want to see how it acts and see if I get sore or whatnot,” Dickerson said. “I don’t think it’s anything too serious, but I’ll be back in the morning to see how it is.”
