Seager scratched right before 1st pitch with back discomfort

CLEVELAND -- Sometime before the first pitch of the Rangers’ game against the Guardians on Tuesday at Progressive Field, Texas’ front office got good news about Brandon Nimmo’s sprained left AC joint. While he’s going to be day to day for the time being, it seems like Texas’ outfielder avoided a stint on the injured list.

It took three pitches into Monday’s game for that good news to be shoved to the wayside, as star shortstop was removed in the top of the first inning on Tuesday due to back discomfort that popped up pregame.

Seager had been in the Rangers’ lineup, hitting third and playing shortstop, but he was pinch-hit for by Cam Cauley before taking the field. Cauley then filled in at second base, while Nicky Lopez slid over from second to short.

An injury to Seager would have a huge impact on the Rangers, who just placed Wyatt Langford on the injured list with a left hamstring strain and are having to play without Nimmo for the time being.

Seager entered Tuesday’s game slashing .182/.292/.374, with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs in 50 games. He missed 19 games earlier this season due to lower back inflammation, and also missed 12 games earlier this month due to a concussion before being activated last week.

Seager played in three games since returning from the concussion, going 1-for-10 (though his lone hit was a home run). He didn’t play in Texas’ series opener against the Guardians on Monday.
