Kristopher Bryant, who took a pitch to his left hand from Reds reliever Drew Storen in the ninth inning on Tuesday, forcing him to leave the game, is expected to be OK.
Bryant had X-rays taken of his hand following the victory, and they revealed a contusion. He is expected to receive the day off Wednesday.
"I'm OK, I think," Bryant said. "I think it could have been a lot worse. That part of the hand is pretty fragile. It's on a 'see how we feel' basis for now."
Cubs manager Joe Maddon had been meaning to give the reigning National League Most Valuable Player Award winner a day off anyway.
"His hand was sore and swollen, so we thought we should get him out of the game and get some ice on it," Maddon said. "We'll give him [Wednesday] off. I had been meaning to get him a day off, and I didn't even get to give him a full day off the other day."
Bryant's injury presented the opportunity for the adaptable Anthony Rizzo to slide over to third base for the final three outs of the contest. Catcher Rene Rivera was the only available position player for the Cubs at that moment in the game.
Rizzo has moved up in the batting order to hit leadoff and played a little bit of second base as part of the club's often-shifting infield. Now he can check the hot corner off his list of positions he's played at the big league level.
The slugger is the first Cubs left-handed thrower to play third base since George Decker in 1895. Jimmy Ryan did so in 1886.
"He's probably letting everybody hear about it," Bryant said of his teammate. "He's probably put himself down as a third baseman on his Twitter bio."
