PHOENIX -- After scoring seven unanswered runs, the D-backs had to hold on as a late Giants rally came up just short and Arizona won, 8-6, on Wednesday night at Chase Field.
The Giants built an early 4-1 lead for starter Matt Moore before the D-backs' offense got in gear, scoring three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
"The Giants are as good as you get," D-backs outfield A.J. Pollock said. "They just keep fighting and you never, ever feel comfortable with a lead. They just keep fighting. We have to do our best to just keep trying to pile them on."

The D-backs wound up needing almost every one of their runs as the Giants rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth and had the tying runs in scoring position with one out before Andrew Chafin fanned Joe Panik and Tom Wilhelmsen got Chris Marrero to fly out to end the inning.
"I felt good in the eighth," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Now [momentum has] swung back our way. … We just couldn't get that one more hit that gets us over the hump and back to tying the game."
Taijuan Walker picked up the win in his D-backs debut while Fernando Rodney earned the save.

Moore suffered the loss, though three of the six runs he allowed in his 5 1/3 innings were unearned. The left-hander complained about his inability to command his curveball.
"As the game went on, my breaking pitch kind of flattened out," Moore said, observing that the desired 12 o'clock-to-6 o'clock drop deserted him. That left him with 10-to-4 movement, which proved insufficient.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Rare error by Belt: Giants first baseman Brandon Belt tripled and hit his first home run of the season, but that's probably not what he'll remember most about this game. Belt was unable to backhand Jake Lamb's two-out, fifth-inning grounder with Chris Owings on third base, Paul Goldschmidt on second base and Arizona trailing, 4-1. The ball skipped far down the right-field line, enabling the runners to score and setting up Yasmany Tomas' RBI double to tie the game.

Hazelbaker delivers: Pinch-hitter Jeremy Hazelbaker's one-out double in the sixth off Moore scored Chris Iannetta and gave the D-backs their first lead of the game at 5-4. The hit was part of a three-inning stretch during which the D-backs outscored the Giants 7-0.
"Some great situational [hitting], some great clutch hitting," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I thought the big blow was Jeremy Hazelbaker left-on-left lining a ball down the right-field line."

Goldschmidt stole the 100th base of his career when he swiped second on the back end of a double steal in the fifth inning. With his 140 homers, Goldschmidt became the fifth first baseman in big league history to have at least 100 homers and 100 stolen bases. The others are Jeff Bagwell, Andres Galarraga, Dan Driessen and Derek Lee.

Giants:Jeff Samardzija, who posted a 2-0 record and a 2.91 ERA in three starts last year against the D-backs, will attempt to prolong his luck in Thursday's 6:40 p.m. PT series finale at Chase Field. Samardzija will embark upon his attempt to reach or exceed 200 innings for the fifth consecutive season.
