PHOENIX -- Pitch efficiency is one of the things that D-backs left-hander Robbie Ray knows he needs to work on so that he can pitch deeper in to games this year.
In his first spring start of the year, Ray lasted just 1 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox instead of two because he hit his 35-pitch limit thanks to some deep counts and three walks.
Ray did not allow any hits and was able to get out of his outing without a run scoring.
"I'm not worried at all," Ray said about not being as efficient as he would like. "First time out in Spring Training I'm not really concerned about it."

This start was more about getting a feel for being back out on the mound in a game situation. In his next few starts he will begin to work more on his efficiency.
• D-backs manager Torey Lovullo liked what he saw from Chris Herrmann at first base.
"He attacked the ball and made a nice play on the bunt," Lovullo said. "He cut a ball and got rid of it quickly and got a big out at home plate, so overall I felt he looked good and I'll talk to him about his comfort level, but as far as I'm concerned it was really good."
