Injury updates for Straily, Realmuto, Cooper

April 10th, 2018

MIAMI -- Another hurdle was crossed in Dan Straily's road to recovery.
On Tuesday, the Marlins' right-hander threw a 29-pitch bullpen session, and if he doesn't feel any discomfort on Wednesday, he will keep tracking toward going on a rehab assignment.
Straily opened the season on the disabled list with a right forearm strain, and Tuesday marked the first time he was on the mound in about three weeks.
"We're making progress," Straily said. "Got through today and didn't feel anything. Another box to check off the old rehab list, I guess."
Straily threw all of his pitches, and even had manager Don Mattingly step into the box to simulate a batter.
"I think we find out tomorrow," Mattingly said. "If he comes in feeling good, then we'll probably have a plan of what he does next."
There is no firm timeline on when Straily could rejoin the rotation, but most likely he will need at least one or two starts in Minor League games to build up to rejoining the Marlins.
"Hopefully just a couple," Straily said of rehab appearances. "That's the idea, to get back here as soon as possible. That's the goal, but at the same time to come back here and be here the rest of the year. Let's deal with this one time, put it behind us, and move forward, and pitch the rest of the season, healthy."
Straily experienced discomfort in his throwing arm after a Spring Training appearance in a Minor League game. Before the setback, he had been announced as the club's No. 2 starter.
Realmuto takes his swings
Catcher J.T. Realmuto had six at-bats on Tuesday in an extended spring game. Realmuto was the designated hitter, and the next step is to get him to catch again.
Realmuto is on the DL with a bone bruise to his lower back, an injury that occurred on March 11. The hope is he can return at some point on the next road trip, which starts on Monday against the Yankees and moves to Milwaukee on April 19.
Cooper in a cast
's entire right forearm -- up to his elbow -- is in a cast, per the recommendation of the medical staff. Cooper is on the DL with a right wrist contusion.
The injury occurred on March 30 when he was struck by a pitch in a game against the Cubs.

After being evaluated by a hand specialist, it was recommended that Cooper completely immobilize the wrist.
"The MRI showed me a little more inflammation than normal," Cooper said. "We'll be in this cast about 10 days, and we'll go from there. They want to see how the wrist reacts to being immobilized. We'll see from that."
Cooper opened the season as the starting right fielder, but he will be out for at least a few weeks.
"It's not what you want, starting off the year, and not what you work for the whole offseason, to come in and have a freak accident like that," Cooper said. "But it's part of sports, part of baseball. You have to move forward."
