Infielder Danny Espinosa and the Yankees have agreed to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training, a source has told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal.
Espinosa, 30, will compete for the second-base job. He slashed .173/.245/.278 with six home runs in 93 games in 2017, 77 with the Angels before stints with the Mariners (eight games) and Rays (eight games).
Though he has never posted an OPS above .737 in his career, Espinosa did hit more than 20 homers in a season twice while with the Nationals (21 in 2011 and 24 in '16).
The Yankees have a short-term need for depth at both second and third base, with Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, ranked as the organization's No. 1 and No. 5 prospects by MLB Pipeline, viewed as the future at those positions.
