ANNAPOLIS, Md.-- David Price threw from 90 feet prior to Saturday's Spring Training finale against the Nationals, and the Red Sox left-hander said he came away feeling good.
Price, who is starting the regular season on the 10-day disabled list, says he is "taking it day by day" as he continues to work back from soreness in his throwing elbow.
Price was cleared to resume throwing late last week. He threw from 75-to-90 feet on Wednesday, and manager John Farrell said the plan is for Price to continue light tossing every two-out-of-three days.
Farrell added that the goal is to have Price increase the length of his throws but not have him push his arm too much too soon.
"It'll be two on and one off, is the plan right now," Farrell said. "We're hopeful to continue to add some distance -- not to increase the intensity -- but to add the distance to the throws."
Farrell told MLB.com's Ian Browne last week that he doesn't quite know when his veteran hurler will return to the mound, but he will be glad to have him back in the rotation whenever the time comes.
"Right now, sitting here today, we don't know how many innings he'll be able to pitch for us this year," Farrell told Browne. "We fully expect him to come back to us. I'd love to sit here and tell you the date in which that will be. The way we have to approach this is he'll be with us when he's first available and with the ability to impact this team and certainly the rotation."
Both Price and his manager seemed to be in good spirits on Saturday when speaking about his recovery process.
"[It was] a positive day for David today," Farrell said.
Worth noting
• The Red Sox optioned infielder Marco Hernandez to Triple-A Pawtucket and recalled infielder Steve Selsky, who earned the final spot on Boston's 25-man Opening Day roster.
"He's got power, he's got defensive versatility -- he can play all three [positions] in the outfield, he can play first base," Farrell said of Selsky. "He has been everything and more than what we could have hoped. He's a young guy, he's durable, he's athletic, and he's shown a bat-to-ball ability."
