Kremer optioned, O's still think 'highly of him'

After Saturday’s 6-1 victory over the Rangers, the Orioles optioned right-hander to the alternate site in Bowie, Md., and recalled reliever Cole Sulser from the alternate site.

The news came a few hours after Kremer allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings against the Rangers. In three starts this season, Kremer – the No. 7 prospect in the Orioles' organization, according to MLB Pipeline -- could not get past the fifth inning and had a 6.75 ERA.

One of the reasons for Kremer’s demotion was that the Orioles have two days off this week, so they only needed four starters. But manager Brandon Hyde said it is just a matter of time before Kremer returns to the rotation.

“[Kremer] was a pro and took it well. We think highly of him. He is going to make a lot of starts for us the rest of the year,” Hyde said.

Hyde said Kremer pitched well on Saturday, and the skipper hopes Kremer can build off that start. However, Hyde wants Kremer to improve on his command.

“It’s not about his stuff, it’s about being able to work ahead in the count and not make mistakes in bad spots, things that you learn as you are up here,” Hyde said. “He is improving. Last night was a big step.”

This is Sulser’s third stint with the Orioles. In 21 games out of the bullpen with Baltimore, Sulser has a 4.91 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings.

“We are adding Sulser today to lengthen our bullpen a little bit,” Hyde said. “We have to be creative in our rotation as well as [in the bullpen].”

Worth noting
According to Hyde, right-hander Hunter Harvey, who is on the injured list because of an oblique strain, is playing catch and progressing well. Harvey pitched in 10 games out of the bullpen for the Orioles last year and had a 4.15 ERA.
