DeShields on DL with fractured fingertip

August 17th, 2018

ARLINGTON -- Rangers outfielder was placed on the 10-day DL Friday with a fracture of the tip of his right middle finger. He sustained the injury on an attempted bunt during the seventh inning of Thursday night's series opener against the Angels. He would be eligible to return on Aug. 27.
The Rangers recalled outfielder from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.
This will be DeShields' third stint on the disabled list this season. He missed time in April with a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, and was on the seven-day concussion list earlier this month.
"I'm sure [it's] disappointing for him," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Little commiserating laugh between us a little earlier, just because I feel for him. … It's tough on Delino, because he appreciates playing the game. He loves playing the game."
It has been a challenging year at the plate for DeShields, who hasn't found a groove. DeShields has batted .204 with two home runs, 22 RBIs, 47 runs and 18 stolen bases over 85 games for the Rangers this season. He hit .269 with 75 runs and a career-high 29 stolen bases last season.
"He's never really been able to develop any real consistency for the year, so I know that's been the challenge for him on the numbers side of it," Banister said.
Robinson will be in his third stint with the Rangers this season. He has batted .186 with one home run and five RBIs in 32 games. Robinson has spent most of the season with Round Rock, batting .303 with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and a .948 OPS in 53 games.

The Rangers also acquired left-hander Joshua Javier from the D-backs, completing a July 31 trade that sent Jake Diekman to Arizona. Javier has been assigned to the Arizona League Rangers. Javier, 19, was 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 10 games (four starts) for the Arizona League D-backs. Javier was signed by Arizona in 2015 as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic.
