One day after leaving Sunday’s win at San Francisco due to discomfort in his right knee, Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu underwent an MRI that revealed inflammation in the joint, the team announced on Monday. LeMahieu is considered day to day, and it is unclear whether he will miss any time.

The Yankees, who have won six of the first seven games on their West Coast road trip, were off Monday before starting a two-game set in Arizona on Tuesday.

LeMahieu originally sustained a deep bruise when he fouled a ball off himself last Friday. He began receiving treatment on the knee but still started both of the next two games and went a combined 2-for-5 with two walks. However, LeMahieu departed in the middle of the third inning Sunday, as the knee became more painful, and was replaced by rookie Thairo Estrada.

A more significant injury would have been a big blow to the Yankees, who already have a Major League-leading 13 players on the injured list.

LeMahieu, who signed with the Yankees as a free agent this offseason, is batting .310/.363/.430 with nine doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs, while spending most of his time at second base. He has played in 27 of the Yankees’ 28 games and leads the team with 31 hits, batting leadoff in each of New York’s past six contests.
