BALTIMORE -- After 13 hitless at-bats, DJ Stewart finally notched his first Major League hit in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Blue Jays, and it was a Little League home run.
Stewart, the Orioles' first draft pick in 2015, singled to right against Blue Jays starter Aaron Sanchez, then advanced to second on an errant throw by right fielder Billy McKinney.
Sanchez, who was backing up third base, picked up the ball and threw home to try to nab Chris Davis attempting to score, but the throw was wild.
Stewart, who was standing on third, was awarded home, giving the Orioles a 4-0 lead. He never imagined his first big league hit coming that way.
"No, not at all," Stewart said. "You run through things many times in your head about how you think it's going to go, but that's the great thing about this game: You never know what it will bring you."
Stewart said he wasn't frustrated by not getting a hit until then, but when it happened, it was almost too unusual to savor in the moment.
"It was run, stop, run, stop," Stewart said. "Hey, you're safe at home, go home. So I didn't really get to process the fact that I just got my first Major League hit."
