After a week sidelined with a concussion, Orioles outfielder DJ Stewart was reinstated from the injured list on Friday. To make room for Stewart, the club optioned right-hander Chandler Shepherd to Triple-A Norfolk.

The club’s No. 23 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Stewart was concussed diving for a fly ball in Baltimore’s 9-4 loss to the Yankees last Wednesday at Oriole Park. It was a freak injury, as Stewart was struck on the temple after diving past what turned into a Mike Ford bloop double.

"He actually joked with me when I went out there, saying, 'We have to stop meeting like this,'" manager Brandon Hyde said at the time. "I thought that showed some pretty good awareness. Then he got checked out, and as the inning went along, he started feeling a little funny, a little dizzy, so we got him out.”

Three days later, Stewart was symptom-free, according to the team. He resumed baseball activity late last weekend and traveled with the team to New York before heading north after Tuesday’s 8-3 loss. Stewart has not spoken publicly since the injury, per MLB concussion protocol.

It was the second time this season an outfield accident cut into an opportunity for Stewart, who also missed three weeks earlier this year after spraining his ankle in a collision in Texas. He figures to get another opportunity with Dwight Smith Jr. progressing but still nursing a left calf strain and the Orioles ultra-short on position-player depth. They’ve turned to Jace Peterson and Hanser Alberto in left and Stevie Wilkerson in center to fill gaps with Smith and Stewart both sidelined. All are natural infielders.

The club’s first-round Draft pick in 2015, Stewart hit .250 with a .890 OPS in 17 games for the Orioles last September, his first taste of the big leagues. He’s gone 4-for-25 (.160) across eight games of Major League action this season, but was sporting a .284/.391/.545 line with 12 homers and 46 RBIs in 61 games at Norfolk.

Yacabonis designated, Eades added

The Orioles risked losing a pitcher they used in a variety of roles this season to bolster their depth on Wednesday, when they claimed righty Ryan Eades off waivers from the Twins and designated Jimmy Yacabonis for assignment.

Yacabonis, 27, showed flashes but ultimately struggled as a swingman-type in 2019. He started four games as an opener, finished six and made 19 appearances in middle relief, pitching to a 6.80 ERA across 29 games overall. All told, Yacabonis owns a 5.75 ERA over 55 games in the Majors since 2017. He can remain with the organization if he clears waivers.

Eades, 27, made his only two career Major League appearances this June for Minnesota, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings in those outings. He’s gone 6-3 with a 4.01 ERA across 38 games (six starts) over parts of the past three seasons at Triple-A.
