Ethier set for bone scan as rehab progresses

Outfielder with team on homestand, participating in limited activity

LOS ANGELES -- Andre Ethier is in town with the Dodgers, continuing to make progress in what has been a long rehab process.
Ethier has progressed to limited baseball activities as he recovers from a broken right tibia sustained in Spring Training. He's scheduled for another leg scan sometime in the next week.
"He's around, he's taking swings," manager Dave Roberts said. "Some front toss, tee work, swinging the bat. He's jogging now. Hopefully here in the next week he'll get another scan, but to tolerance, he feels good."
Ethier has spent most of his rehab time at the team's facility in Arizona, his home state and where he lives in the offseason.
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said he hopes to see Ethier back in July, but that could be a tall order for Ethier's healing process. Ethier's next scan should provide more clarity, but he will almost certainly have to spend a significant amount of time on a rehab assignment.
"Obviously, it's a tough thing to say with any level of precision," Friedman said. "No one is more frustrated than he is. He wants it to be yesterday. With a bone, it's not something you can rehab or strengthen to get it better. It's a bone, it has to heal on its own timeline. It's healing, it's just not all the way there yet to be able to push to a full go."
Ethier's role when he returns would likely depend on if Joc Pederson (shoulder) has already returned from the DL. With Pederson present and getting regular starts in center, Ethier would have to fight for starts in left field with Trayce Thompson and Howie Kendrick. If Pederson isn't back, Thompson would stay in center and leave Ethier and Kendrick in what would likely be a matchup-based situation.
