Grandal, Kendrick need more recovery time

Catcher feels fine, but Roberts concerned about handling workload

March 26th, 2016

PHOENIX -- Dodgers manager Dave Roberts offered a mixed injury update Friday, with ailments of catcher Yasmani Grandal and second baseman Howie Kendrick putting Opening Day in jeopardy, but also more optimism about Corey Seager's progress.
Roberts said "odds are decreasing" of Grandal being ready by April 4, as his tentative return to games from a lingering right forearm strain has been pushed back beyond Monday.
"He feels fine now. But as a manager, I have to look at the whole workload," said Roberts. "We have to see how he recovers and responds once we get him doing baseball activities. Odds are decreasing. If there's something there, we have a chance to take care of it. His workload has to be tempered because that's how he hurt it.
"The workload of playing in a game for nine innings and taking swings getting ready for the game, right now he feels fine, but we've got to look at if he can handle the workload. Guys coming back from injury, I've got to have the confidence he can sustain health."

Meanwhile, Kendrick's left calf seems to be worse than originally believed. He strained it Tuesday running through first base. Kendrick said it felt better Friday than it did Thursday, but Roberts said Kendrick needs at least a couple more days.
"I'm optimistic he'll be ready for Opening Day," said Roberts. "It's going to be a three- or four-day deal."
Kendrick, who missed a few games earlier in the spring with groin tightness, said he often has Achilles tenderness during Spring Training, but the current tightness is higher in the calf.

"Just popped up in my last at-bat the other night," he said Friday. "Hopefully it's nothing major. Feels better today. It's loosened up a lot since yesterday. Hopefully back out there as soon as possible."
Seager took four more at-bats in Minor League games, but still isn't running during those at-bats.
"You don't want to go too far too fast," he said. "Today was progress."
He has continued running and fielding drills and said he is pain-free and considers the injury healed.
Brandon Beachy has resumed throwing after experiencing elbow soreness and might throw off a mound over the weekend.
