The Angels have begun assembling their coaching staff under new manager Brad Ausmus. On Tuesday, they hired Astros bullpen coach Doug White to be their pitching coach.
White replaces Charles Nagy on the Angels staff, who was pitching coach for the past three seasons.
The 2018 season was White's first as Houston's bullpen coach. He was their Minor League pitching coordinator for the previous two seasons, and had been in the organization since 2013. Prior to his tenure with the Astros, White was a pitching coach in the Cardinals' Minor League system for five years.
Under White, the Astros had one of baseball's best bullpens this season. Houston relievers led the Majors with a 3.03 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, and held opposing hitters to an MLB-low .212 batting average. Their 29.1-percent strikeout rate was the second-highest of any team relief corps, behind only the Yankees' 30.2-percent mark.
