PHILADELPHIA -- When Stephen Drew saw the ball bounce off the wall and get away from center fielder Odubel Herrera, he thought for sure he could extend his hit into a triple. But about halfway to third, he did not expect to see third base coach Bobby Henley waving him around third and sending him home.
"Pretty much very surprised. It kind of happened fast," Drew said. "I was like, 'Man, I gotta kick it into gear here.'"
A combination of his hustle toward the plate and an errant relay throw by the Phillies completed a pinch-hit inside the park home run for Drew to help cap the Nationals' 5-1 victory on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park.
"I was watching Bobby Henley. Then I was watching Stephen. I was like 'oh no!'" Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. "Then I was like 'oh yeah!' when they missed the cutoff man. That was big."
Drew's home run was actually the second inside-the-park homer the Nationals have hit this month, including one by Ryan Zimmerman on May 15. Washington is the first team since Colorado in 2014 to hit two inside-the-park homers in the same month (both Brandon Barnes).
Drew also hit an inside-the-park homer in 2010 with Arizona. His homer was the second of a back-to-back after Danny Espinosa hammered a two-run shot and one of four homers on the day for the Nationals. Washington has hit eight pinch-hit homers as a team, already matching a franchise record (2005-present) in the first two months of the season.

"The guys that play every day, we just try to pick those guys up, whether it be with the bat or in the field," Drew said. "I think we've been able to contribute somehow, some way, which is really key for a long season."
