OAKLAND -- The Rangers placed left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Saturday, with left mid-arm nerve tightness.

Smyly reported the discomfort in his arm after his last start, a 7-2 loss to Houston last Friday in which he allowed four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He’s 0-2 with a 7.80 ERA in three starts.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward expressed belief that Smyly should miss only one or two starts, at the most.

“I don’t think it’s that bad, honestly,” Woodward said. "I don’t foresee it being a big issue.”

To replace Smyly on the active roster, Texas recalled right-hander Wei-Chieh Huang from Double-A Frisco. Huang was expected to arrive in time for Tuesday night’s game against Oakland.

The 25-year-old Huang is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in six appearances (one start) for Frisco this season.

The Rangers are expected to name a starter for Wednesday’s series finale after Tuesday’s game. It’ll likely be a current reliever.

Worth noting

• Second baseman Rougned Odor took batting practice and will report to Triple-A Nashville for what is expected to be a two-game rehab assignment at Iowa. Odor, recovering from a sprained right knee, hopes to be activated from the injured list on Friday.

“The last couple of days, I’ve been feeling really good,” Odor said.

• First baseman Ronald Guzman has also been participating in baseball-related activities, but he said that he still has a “small tear” in his strained right hamstring that is keeping him on the injured list. Woodward mentioned the possibility of sending Guzman to extended Spring Training in Arizona so he can continue to hit while finishing his recovery.

• As expected, shortstop Elvis Andrus started Tuesday night's game against the A's despite noticeable swelling in his right hand. Andrus was hit by a pitch in the first inning of Monday night’s loss. However, Andrus insisted that he could ignore the discomfort.

“For me, it’s more knowing that it’s not broke. The pain that I have is because of the swelling,” Andrus said. “So now that I know it’s no problem, mentally I can swing hard knowing that nothing’s going to happen.”
