Pedroia's injury rehab assignment on hold

Sore left knee sidelined veteran second baseman at Double-A

May 13th, 2019

BOSTON -- Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia returned from his Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Monday, two days after he was scratched from the lineup there with discomfort in his problematic left knee.

In the transaction announcing the move -- which was retroactive to Sunday -- the Red Sox called it “minor left knee soreness."

The numerous issues Pedroia has dealt with concerning the left knee, however, have been anything but minor.

He has played in just nine games over the last two seasons since undergoing a cartilage replacement procedure after the 2017 season. Pedroia was also hampered throughout ’17, when he was limited to 105 games and played most of the season with discomfort after he was spiked by Manny Machado in April.

Pedroia will remain on the 10-day injured list. The Red Sox could have more news on a timetable for Pedroia prior to Tuesday’s game against the Rockies.

Until Saturday’s lineup scratch, things had been going well for Pedroia on his latest Minor League rehab assignment. He played five games between May 2-9, going 4-for-16.

“I was surprised [about the lineup scratch], honestly,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora prior to Sunday’s game. “I was on my way to the house and I got a text from [trainer] Brad [Pearson]. I was surprised. I talked to Pedey. He texted me and I talked to him this morning. He’s on board with [being] smart. Hopefully it’s nothing. Hopefully it’s the brace, that it’s too tight or something. I don’t know.”
