The right-field foul pole at Fenway Park is so famous it has its own name. Pesky's Pole -- named after former Red Sox Johnny Pesky, a light-hitting shortstop from the 1940s-50s -- is 302 feet from home plate, a tempting target for left-handed hitters. Orioles outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. is such a batsman, and he took full advantage of the storied ballpark's dimensions in the top of the fifth inning of the O's 8-1 win over the Red Sox on Monday, which was Jackie Robinson Day across the Major Leagues and Patriots' Day in Boston.

Smith, who had homered in the first game of the four-game set on Friday, capped Baltimore's three-run fifth inning with a two-run shot that barely cleared the three-foot-high wall that curves toward Pesky's Pole. The "long ball" was caught on the fly by a fan in the first row and gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead. It appeared to go only slightly farther than a Lorenzo Cain homer from July 29, 2017, which went a projected 302 feet and is the shortest over-the-fence homer that Statcast has tracked since it debuted in 2015.

Smith added a two-run double in the ninth inning to finish the day with four RBIs.
