Cease savors 'goodies' from first MLB start, win

Covey to start Sunday for Charlotte; Madrigal honored for June tear with Birmingham

CHICAGO -- With the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep for the White Sox lasting 12 innings, Dylan Cease didn’t really get a chance to celebrate with his family after picking up his first victory in his first career start.

“It was more got home late, gave everyone a hug and showed some of the game stuff,” said a smiling Cease prior to Thursday’s series finale. “Then I called it a night.”

From Wednesday afternoon’s first start, the Major League Baseball's No. 18 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, was given the baseball from his first out and his first strikeout. He took home the lineup card, his cleats and his hat.

“I’m probably missing some stuff,” Cease said. “I got some goodies.”

Cease allowed three runs over five innings, striking out six and walking four. His biggest moment came in the first, when he threw 33 pitches, walked two and hit a batter after two were out. That momentarily lapse produced two Detroit runs, but Cease quickly limited the damage.

Cease's fastball topped out at 99.6 mph, per Statcast. And he knows Wednesday simply stood as the first step of a work in progress as part of the White Sox rotation.

“Yeah, definitely. There is going to be a lot of learning to do, but I’m happy to do it at the Major League level,” Cease said. “We are not robots.

“We have to go out every day and our bodies will never feel the same. It’s just constantly finding that feel, and whoever can consistently do that is going to be the one who has success.”

Covey moving closer

will have another injury rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. The right-hander will stay in Chicago and throw a bullpen over the All-Star break. Then his situation will be re-evaluated.

Covey, who has been on the injured list retroactive to June 6 with right shoulder inflammation, figures to be part of the White Sox rotation for the second half. He has allowed no earned runs over six innings covering two previous rehab starts, touching 98 mph with his fastball.

Madrigal ready for Futures Game

Nick Madrigal shared White Sox Minor League Player of the Month honors with Steele Walker for June, while the Pitcher of the Month went to Kade McClure. But Madrigal, the White Sox No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, also will have the honor of playing in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday with Luis Robert. Madrigal is hitting .382 since his promotion to Double-A Birmingham.

“I'm very honored to be chosen, to be able to represent the organization,” said Madrigal during a Thursday afternoon conference call. “Going with Luis Robert, he's definitely deserving of it, the things he's done this year. I'm excited to go out there.

“I know there's going to be a lot of great talent. It's something that I've wanted to do for the last couple years. I've watched it on TV, I've had friends who have played in it. I told my mom it's something I wanted to do this year, to play in this game. When they told me I'd be going out, I was really excited and humbled to be able to represent the White Sox.”
