BOSTON -- The Red Sox lost some right-handed-hitting outfield depth and speed -- perhaps for the rest of the season.
Eli White, acquired on the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline, suffered a ligament injury at the top of his right foot when he crashed into a grated piece of metal in front of the wall in center field at Fenway Park on Tuesday.
White was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, before Friday’s game. Infielder Anthony Seigler, who has contributed to the Red Sox at various times this season, was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take White’s spot on the roster.
“They're actually still going through scans,” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said of White. “Saw another doctor, and our doctor again today, and I think they're sending it for more opinions with some other doctors, so they're still working through exactly what the severity of it is.
“Right now, it's a ligament injury in the foot. He's on crutches and in a boot. So the IL part was fairly obvious over the course of the last couple of days. He is in a lot of discomfort. He's not going to be able to play for a bit, but they are still working through to determine the full severity of everything.”
The Red Sox have had a series of injuries to position players lately. WIllson Contreras, who started a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Friday, was placed on the IL on Aug. 31 with a left hamstring strain. Center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela has been out since Sept. 3 with a right quad strain.
In fact, White filled in admirably for Rafaela in center field last weekend in Baltimore, going 5-for-16 with a homer and five RBIs in a four-game sweep for the Red Sox.
Rafaela should be back within the next week or so. For Friday’s game, Tracy went with Roman Anthony in left field and Jarren Duran in center. Duran has played left field most of the season while Anthony has mainly been used at DH since he came off the IL on Aug. 30.
The Red Sox also have Nate Eaton -- called up from Worcester -- to play center against lefties until Rafaela gets back.
In 27 games and 13 starts since joining the Red Sox, White has a slash line of .276/.300/.379 with three doubles, a homer and 12 RBIs.
