WASHINGTON -- Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar sustained a strained left wrist when he landed awkwardly while reaching for a lost liner from the Nationals’ Jacob Young in the bottom of the fifth inning of Colorado's 13-3 loss on Monday night at Nationals Park.
Tovar left the game after the inning.
The play, which would have been a highlight had Tovar made it, was ruled a hit. But beyond that, the Rockies had an awful defensive inning that included Willi Castro’s wild throw to first that let two runs score on Nasim Nuñez’s sacrifice-bunt attempt. The Nats stole two bases in the inning, and one -- Daylen Lile’s steal of third -- resulted in a run when catcher Brett Sullivan’s throw sailed into left field.
The Rockies had given starter Ryan Feltner a 2-0 lead on homers by Castro to lead off the fourth and Tovar to open the top of the fifth. But after the defensive mess, they trailed, 5-2, by the end of the fifth.
Tovar, a 2024 Gold Glove Award winner, struggled through hip and oblique injuries most of last season and has struggled at the plate this year. The homer was his 10th, but he is batting .209.
