Felix could rejoin Mariners for next homestand

August 18th, 2019

TORONTO -- If things go well for Felix Hernandez on Monday for Triple-A Tacoma, Mariners manager Scott Servais says the veteran right-hander could rejoin the club by next weekend after missing more than three months with right shoulder issues.

Hernandez will make his fourth Minor League rehab start in Monday’s 7:05 p.m. PT game against Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium after throwing four scoreless innings on Wednesday for Class A Short-Season Everett.

“He’s good to go Monday,” Servais said prior to Sunday’s series finale with the Blue Jays. “Hopefully he’ll go five innings. That would be great. His last outing was very positive. He felt great, felt very good coming out of it. Fingers crossed it continues.”

The Mariners have been going with just four starters since trading Mike Leake to the D-backs on July 31 thanks to a high number of off-days, but they needed to go with an all-bullpen start in Saturday’s win over Toronto and have an opening for Hernandez as soon as he’s ready.

“I’d love to get him back in our rotation at some point this next homestand,” Servais said. “That would be great. If he gets through this next one and feels good, we need an extra starter. Maybe Saturday or Sunday, something like that.”

The Mariners are hosting the Blue Jays in a three-game series starting Friday at T-Mobile Park, followed by three games with the Yankees.

Hernandez went 1-4 with a 6.52 ERA in eight starts before being shut down following a rough outing in Boston in early May. The 33-year-old is in the final year of a contract paying him $27 million this season, and this likely is the final month of a 15-year run with the Mariners.

Worth noting

has played strictly at designated hitter since July 27 due to a strained right elbow, but he has begun a light throwing program. The hope is that he could return to right field in the coming weeks.

• Reliever made his second straight scoreless outing for Tacoma in a rehab outing on Saturday, throwing 1 1/3 innings with one hit and one strikeout as he works back from a strained right forearm.

• Right fielder was held out of Saturday’s game in Tacoma due to lower back soreness. The back issue isn’t related to the surgery, but the 2018 All-Star continues taking it slow in his return from a ruptured testicle.
