Girardi on Galvis' IQ: 'He is always thinking'

NEW YORK -- Ever since he rejoined the Phillies in a trade from the Orioles in late July, infielder has left a great impression on manager Joe Girardi. It’s more than just going 9-for-29 (.310) in his last nine starts. The skipper has been impressed with Galvis’ baseball IQ.

Girardi said Galvis is on top of things on the baseball diamond. Galvis, for example, will always ask about the offensive situation three hitters before he steps to the plate.

"He is always thinking about what he needs to do before he goes into the batter’s box,” Girardi said.

Galvis, dealt from Baltimore to Philadelphia on July 30, got off to a slow start in his second stint with the Phillies. It didn’t help he was dealing with a right quadriceps strain. He was activated from the injured list on Aug. 24. Girardi believes Galvis, a shortstop by trade, is over the injury and ready to see a lot of action at third base.

“He just seems to be in a good spot right now,” Girardi said. “I think it took him a while to get his timing back. He looks more comfortable at third base for us. I think he is moving better. Coming off the injury, I think it took some time.”
