The line to the MLB Flagship store stretched around the block. Hundreds of fans gathered, stretching from the store's location on 6th Avenue to the next avenue behind.
But the fans weren't waiting for a ballplayer. They were in line to see Fuerza Regida, the San Bernardino band whose combination of traditional Mexican and norteño music with elements of raggaeton and hip-hop has made them global superstars. The group was celebrating the end of its "This is Our Dream" ballpark tour with a special merch drop on Thursday.
"Just doing stadiums in general is crazy," Jesús Ortiz Paz, the lead singer for the group, told MLB Network after the event. "Selling out all the seats at a baseball stadium is crazy. And what's different, too, is that we can't really go onto the diamond. We can't touch it. It's sacred."
Of course, they've had the chance to walk on the diamond -- but only when throwing out the first pitch, never for a concert.
"When they invite me, it's because I'm one of the best pitchers," Paz joked. "But when I'm not invited, I can only sing in the stadium and shout it out. That's all."
The nine-stop tour -- which saw the band perform at eight big league stadiums -- was a little more personal for at least one member.
"I used to play baseball when I was a kid," guitarist Khrystian Ramos said. "Now being able to perform at the stadiums is just crazy. One step closer to getting to where we want to."
Thursday saw the release of a special MLB co-branded tee-shirt with the band, along with tour merch that included a tee featuring each of their ballpark stops.
"[This collaboration] means a lot of good things because baseball and MLB is a big sport, as well as our band," Paz said. "Now that we're colliding and both of those worlds are coming together, it means we're just going to be bigger."
As for what's next, Paz refused to speculate. After all, for the genre-mixing musician, he's already seen the future.
"Every year is more exciting than the last," Paz said. "So another exciting year, but better. You guys ready? We're from 2032. So we come from 2032. We time traveled back to 2026, right now. So, I've already seen the future. It's crazy. I just can't tell you."
