1. Randy Johnson hits a bird

During a Spring Training game at Tucson Electric Park, Hall of Famer Randy Johnson stood on the mound facing Giants outfielder Calvin Murray and uncorked one of his upper-90s fastballs. The ball never reached the plate, however, as it struck a bird that had flown in its path. The ball hit the bird square, sending feathers flying in every direction.

Johnson now works as a professional photographer, and his logo is -- what else? -- a dead bird.

2. Mark Grace imitates Mike Fetters on the mound

Trailing the Dodgers, 18-0, heading into the ninth inning, D-backs manager Bob Brenly brought in first baseman Mark Grace to pitch the ninth. It was Grace’s first -- and only -- career pitching appearance, and he made the moment comical when he imitated reliever Mike Fetters’ patented deep breath and stare. Also of note, Grace allowed a homer during the inning to David Ross, the first of his career, and then good-naturedly shooed Ross around the bases.

3. Bob Brenly throws ball into the stands
July 11, 2003
When he went out to the mound to make a pitching change in the seventh inning, Brenly expressed his displeasure with home plate umpire Tim McClelland’s strike zone. McClelland ejected Brenly, who responded by turning and firing the baseball he had just taken from his pitcher up into the seats at Chase Field.

Asked about the toss after game, Brenly said, “It was a four-seamer.”

4. Zack Greinke drives the bus

When players came up with big hits early in the 2016 season, they would mimic turning a steering wheel. “Driving the bus” was what veteran catcher Welington Castillo called it. After Zack Greinke singled in the sixth inning against the Cardinals, outfielder David Peralta implored Greinke from the dugout to “drive the bus,” and the dugout went crazy when Greinke actually did it.

“I was so excited!” Peralta said. “It was the best moment of the game.”

5. Chicken finger falls from the sky

The D-backs led the Giants, 7-5, in the bottom of the 12th inning at Oracle Park with Randall Delgado on the mound facing San Francisco’s Buster Posey. As Delgado delivered the 2-0 pitch, a chicken finger, dropped by a seagull, fell from the sky and landed on the mound.
