Cooper day to day with right leg cramps

First baseman singles, then exits during sixth inning

July 7th, 2019

ATLANTA -- The Marlins on Saturday afternoon escaped with a 5-4 win over the Braves at SunTrust Park, and the club also appears to have avoided a serious injury situation with first baseman .

Cooper exited after delivering a single due to right leg cramps in the sixth inning. Manager Don Mattingly said he doesn't believe it is anything more serious.

The Marlins close out the first half on Sunday with their series finale against the Braves, and it is unclear if Cooper will be available. If not, it may be more for precautionary reasons.

Cooper had an agonizing at-bat against right-hander Josh Tomlin in the sixth, which included fouling the ball off his left foot and appearing to favor his right hamstring area. He was tended to by the team’s medical staff.

Cooper finished his at-bat, singling to left before being replaced by pinch-runner JT Riddle.

The Marlins already are shorthanded with third baseman Brian Anderson nursing a bruised right elbow. Anderson is available to pinch-hit, but he hasn't started since Wednesday.

Cooper went 2-for-3 with a walk on Saturday, raising his season batting average to .308 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs. He has had two IL stints this season for a left calf strain and left hand contusion.
