NEW YORK -- The Yankees' depth is being tested in the early going, but their expectations have not changed, believing that they continue to field a team capable of making this a special season in the Bronx. They displayed some of that mettle on Monday, shaking off a pair of surprising injuries to their roster.

Hours after Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar landed on the injured list, Gary Sánchez and Brett Gardner homered to support Domingo Germán's solid effort and Aaron Judge turned in a potentially game-saving catch in the eighth inning as the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 3-1, at Yankee Stadium.

Having earned a place in the rotation with a strong spring, Germán limited the Tigers to an unearned run and one hit over five innings. He walked five batters but struck out seven, tossing 79 pitches before yielding to the bullpen.

New York got to Detroit starter Tyson Ross for three runs (two earned) and four hits through five innings. Sánchez slugged his second homer of the year in the second inning, a solo shot to the loading dock in left-center field, and Luke Voit scored from first base on a third-inning Greg Bird single that featured an error by left fielder Christin Stewart.

Gardner cleared the right-center-field fence in the fifth inning, his first homer of the year.

Chad Green and Zack Britton worked scoreless frames out of the Yankees bullpen, but Adam Ottavino worked into trouble in the eighth, walking the first two men he faced. Niko Goodrum connected on a sinking line drive to right field, which Judge snared on a difficult play. Ottavino recorded the next two outs without incident, handing off to Aroldis Chapman for the ninth.
